It’s time for the very first WorldEmber Homework Challenge 2020! Buckle your seat belts and get ready to be inspired by your own work!
What is the WorldEmber homework challenge?
So, as many of you will know, we trialed a Summer Camp prep series this year in June, the month before the main event. For those interested, we covered topics such as worldbuilding meta, curated inspiration boards, choosing your active worldbuilding area, and worldbuilding/ player primers.
We got such an incredible response from you guys, and such great feedback, that we thought we’d try it again! So let’s go through today’s homework, and get you, and your world, ready for WorldEmber 2020!
WorldEmber Homework Challenge Week 1 – gain inspiration from… YOURSELF!
If you’re not sure what you’re going to be worldbuilding this WorldEmber, then this homework challenge is for you!
This week’s aim is to get you started thinking about what you’ll be working on during WorldEmber 2020. There’s nothing scarier than staring at a blank page, and knowing that you have to write 333 words about SOMETHING…. but having no idea what that something might be!
Start by reading through your world on World Anvil. You might focus on your most-viewed or most-liked articles – things other people have enjoyed about your world. Or you could focus on your own favorite parts of your world. If you’ve been thinking about opening up a new active worldbuilding area, then read around the places where you mention this area (use the dashboard for this!). What do you already know about it?
But here’s the trick. As you’re reading, keep an eye out for concepts that you’d like to expand into an article of their own. Usually, that’s going to be aspects and concepts in your world which excite you. After all, that’s what you’re going to want to include in a D&D campaign or a novel later on!
Another trick will be to read your meta (and fill it out, if you haven’t already)! That’s a GREAT way to get inspiration from your own world about what to build next.
Create your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document
Once you have these shiny ideas, put them all together into a Generic Article. This is your control document, your mission statement for WorldEmber 2020. We’ll call it your “WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document”, but you can call it something else if you like!
There are a few ways you can format your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document. It might be a list of titles with short descriptions and a template type. It can be stub-articles (i.e. articles under 50 words) or even placeholders – remember to use the mentions system! You could even present the list as a table… or even a roll table! That will add an extra ability for you to randomize what you’re working on. If you get stuck during December, just let a random roll decide what you should write next!
How many ideas will you need for your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document?
The base goal for WorldEmber is 10,000 words, which works out at about 333 words a day. If you tend to write short articles (say, around 300 words each), aim for about 20-30 ideas. Remember that as you write each article, you’ll already come up with related, spin-off articles you’ll want to add to your world. You can add those to your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge document during the event. But some of the articles won’t inspire you in the moment (that always happens!) so it’s good to have a few extra.
If your articles tend to be very long (around 1000 words, or 5 standard paragraphs), you’ll probably only need 8-12 ideas in your list. If in doubt, a few extra won’t hurt, though!
N.B. REMEMBER to keep ALL stub articles under 50 words! Stubs can have their creation date reset, which means that you’ll be able to use them during WorldEmber for your word count. Longer articles cannot have their start date reset, which means that they WILL NOT be added to your word count during December. You can find the word count of your article by expanding “Open advanced tools & options” on the right hand of the edit interface, and clicking Metadata, or in the articles and categories list.
What if you’re starting a brand new world for WorldEmber 2020?
If you’re going into WorldEmber with the goal to create a whole new worldbuilding project from scratch, then make SURE you fill out the meta page for that world! That will already spin-off a wealth of new articles, particularly the sections about the geography, the past and the peoples!
How to complete WEEK 1 of the WorldEmber Homework Challenge
- Read through your world, your current to-do list, and your world meta
- Pinpoint the areas or aspects of your world you’d like to expand
- To create your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document, make a generic article. Then, just list the articles, concepts and topics you pledge to work on during WorldEmber! We recommend at least 12-20 items in this, depending on how long your articles tend to be.
- Once you’re done, simply write a comment at the bottom of this blog post, and copy the URL of your WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document into the comment! You can add something else too, if you like. For example, it’s always great to know how you found the challenge – was it helpful? Was it easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy? 🙂
The next WorldEmber Homework Challenge will be released on Saturday 14th November live on stream! Make sure you’re following the World Anvil Youtube and Twitch channels so you don’t miss it!
I hope to be able to get my ideas written down and on to WorldAnvil. It’s been slow going so far. Maybe this will help. I already had several parts that just need fleshing out so, I hope to do just that. I’m really happy that I was able to catch the livestream to learn about this.
Lyraine Alei https://www.worldanvil.com/w/corive-lyraine-alei/a/worldember-2020-article
I am still filling it in, but somehow it went from “I will put a silly quote to relax the tone a little” to “the stupid quotes and I are one and the same”
I’ve been prepping for this since SC ended!!! HYPE!!!!!!!!
Pledge has been made!
Getting the first few lines was super easy… Then when I counted words and realized how far I still had to go to get to 10,000, it started to look for more daunting! But I’m game for the challenge!
It’s not much. I’m still pretty new at this and hoping this challenge will inspire me to actually sit down and work on this instead of bits and pieces being in my head.
I’m tackling WorldEmber from a GM’s perspective!
I had a lot of fun doing this!
Here’s my completed world meta using the new section: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/Melior/meta

Getting ready to properly document a setting I only have notes and story fragments of on paper, from well over half a decade ago:
Here’s my pledge for this! It’ll be my first WorldEmber ever!
Apologies for the link having article twice, I didn’t think about the naming until after.

I still need to come up with a few more article idea’s, but here is what I got so far.
Still working on it, but I’m excited to get cracking on these articles: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/manifold-sky-bcgrwurth/a/worldember-2020-homework-13A-pledge-document-article?preview=true?
I’m so excited!
Bilingual ‘case why not? xD
First time participating, I’m beyond excited! Here’s my pledge 🙂
This year, I’m gonna focus on four broad areas and what I can do within that.
Also a first-timer. Summer camp was amazing! I’m looking forward to December 😀
Creating a pledge/to-do-list is a really nice idea, too!
This will be my first WorldEmber! I’ve been here since about two weeks before Summercamp, World Anvil is exactly what I needed to get my World of Cartyrion Campaign setting organized and eventually published. Thanks to the Great GM for pointing me here, and thanks to Janet and Dimi for providing not only the best platform of its kind on the internet, but also for encouraging the best community of people I’ve ever experienced online (or elsewhere, for that matter!) – and I’ve been experiencing communities of people for a VERY long time!
Here’s the pledge for WorldEmber:
Let the games beginn anew! Aim high!
WorldEmber hype! Here is my pledge:
First time properly joining this challenge! WorldEmber will be the month of me finishing up my stubs for my worlds. The pledge will continue to expand as I find more articles to work more.
WorldEmber! Lots of work to do. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/aecenys-godwit1ivy/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article?preview=true
Uhmm, i have finals in Dec, so not positive i’m going to be completely on board, but heres my pledge anyways!
Should probably leave this here, hey? Here’s my pledge document. Does this count as cheating? https://www.worldanvil.com/w/istralar-hanhula/a/worldember-2020—plans-upon-plans-article
Here’s mine. Basically put in all the stubs I want to work on. I’m sure I’ll be adding in a ton more.
Hello everyone! I though I’d join you all on the quest for the World Ember https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-chronicles-of-tyrhos-dungeonmastergaz/a/world-ember-2020-pledge-document-article?preview=true
Your document is a draft or private! Might want to fix that 🙂
Thank you SoulLink, but it’s set to published-public-done so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated
I had a deeper look and I believe it was the Global “Private” setting. Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction , and apologies to everyone who tried to view it!
Here’s my homework! https://www.worldanvil.com/w/idyll/a/worldember-pledge-article

WorldEmber is coming! I can’t wait to get started on this challenge and see the amazing entries 🙂
Here’s my initial pledge. I hit the minimum last year… I’m hoping I can go beyond it this year. The good news is, I’ve already got ideas—and the pledge!
I am so excited
I did my homework too! https://www.worldanvil.com/w/black-light/a/worldember20-pledge
So excited for WorldEmber 😀
My homework is done! 🙂
whew, this week’s HW done.
This is my first ever WorldEmber! It sounds super amazing and I am so happy to take part in it!
My WorldEmber pledge: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-disputed-lands-urania/a/worldember-pledge-article. I had so many favorite Summer Camp articles I had to cull my list a few times before my sidebar looked nice!
Keen for WorldEmber!
The homework is complete: here’s my first-ever WorldEmber pledge: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/tamyrh-j-i-rogers/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article.
So a bit late as always 😛 My pledge!
First ever WorldEmber! Really hope I can carve out the time to take a deep-dive into my world
First WorldEmber Hype! I pledge my allegiance to the Anvil.
My Pledge Document for WorldEmber 😀
Finally done with this Pledge as well. Since the event of Friday the 13th calls for it: Good luck everyone with your endeavors!
Excited for my first WorldEmber! https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-hallowed-plane-ebrodtman/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article
Finally got my document ready, though I’ll probably add more to it 🙂
Got my homework finished!
I was so excited for WorldEmber I forgot to post the link XD
LUTF! Here’s my article: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/tarantellia-lnphysics/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article
This challenge wasn’t too bad and I suspect it will help immensely next month.
And here’s my pledge! https://www.worldanvil.com/w/six-elements-balance-dedicatedfollower467/a/worldember-2020-pledge-article
I’m starting a new world, so I also filled out the world meta: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/six-elements-balance-dedicatedfollower467/meta
Honestly, this was a fairly easy challenge– and helpful! It let me actually write down the important concepts I needed to!
Here’s my document: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-wellspring-dragons-kwyn-marie/a/worldember-pledge-document-december-2020-article.
I plan to get a lot of work done on the world this December. I feel like I’ve neglected it lately, and would like to show it some love.
Here’s my pledge! Though it might be more accurate to call it a rollable scrapbook – I may have gone overboard in cataloguing all the stubs that I’d like to work on and putting them into many, MANY tables 😛
I’ve made my brief list and with luck it will be one I can do most or all of even with my work being mad and my arm being a spiteful and hateful entity. I am trying to catch up (itll be futile) on NaNoWriMo and Mapvember but I know even at my best I won’t. I don’t wanna miss World Ember too, I’m determined not to let my damn replaced elbow and its aching stop me. I gotta learn to live with the discomfort I’m stuck with it for life, so, what better way to try and just bury it than dive down ALL THE RABBIT HOLES in my world. 😀
Lots of geography to figure out, and a couple of world-shaping historical events and characters.
Really late to the party, but here’s my pledge. Had only today, though.
Also, spent too much time with CSS, I gotta learn that more thoroughly. Though I wanted to get the scroll to unfold, I couldn’t do it without JS which I also don’t know yet, and I need to be a Legendary for that xD
I was too busy this summer and unable to join SummerCamp, so let’s see if I can manage this time ^-^
I want to try and add some of the article types I don’t typically do, which is what Summer Camp was so helpful for, but here’s where I’m at with ideas right now. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/eccbooks/a/worldember-2020
This is my first WorldEmber! Very excited to get working and refining ideas and getting more ideas down in WA. ^.^
Better late than never! 🙂
Hopefully did this all right. First time doing anything like this:
Here we go (finally):
Rather late, but I managed to complete my pledge for worldember! I’m so excited to do this!
Here’s my outline plan for WorldEmber 2020… https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-world-of-acuthan-tcats/a/worldember-2020-article?preview=true
It’s a little late, but here is my week one homework.
Hopefully I have the permissions set correctly.
Now I need to go work on week two 🙂
I’m going to build up some adventures for TTRPGs when I light the Forge this year.
That is the wrong one
This is the right one https://www.worldanvil.com/w/new-worldbuilding-project-tntauthorman/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document2C-tntauthorman2C-november2C-15th2C-2020-article?preview=true
With this post I become accountable for this pledge: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/teurram-nchia373/a/world-ember-2020-pledge-document-article?preview=true?
Your pledge is private or draft. If you wish to share you should change that 🙂
Thank you! Did I mention I’m new here? Heh. Much appreciated.
I hope I’m not biting off more than I can chew but I’m building a brand new world for WorldEmber! here’s my Pledge: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-bennorian-chronicles-lethann/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article
This is the pledge…. Glory to the Devouring Mother.
Super excited to join in this year! I head about Worldember back in 2018 from a youtube video and was reminded by someone in an art discord server that it was happening!
Hi, your pledge document is either draft or private. If you wish to share you should change that 🙂
Going to have fun with this. So far I think I can get this done https://www.worldanvil.com/w/niya-yur-lartra/a/worldember-2020-pledge-planning-challenge-1-article
THE OATH OF WORLD EMBER MOUNTAIN IS MADE!
In the bitter, plague-ridden winter of the year 2020, Bragvar, King of Skalds, vowed to inscribe the entire history of Vrald upon World Ember mountain, deep in the frozen land of Ravnheim.
Follow to hear his tales!
Looking forward to starting a new world in WorldEmber 2020!
Thought I posted this a few days ago but guess not!
First time doing anything like this so hopefully I’m doing it right.
I have created a checklist! This will be my first “pass” at the WorldEmber goal: completing the “top-level” world descriptions. If I hit my word minimums this will put me halfway through the 10K words, but I suspect I will be a LOT closer to 10K than I expect. I write long once I get going!
Once these items are all completed, I’ll total where I am, and sketch out the next level of individual article goals. Between now and December I expect I will probably put in a list to work from (as I have plenty of stubs waiting for attention).
This is the year I finally get my novel off the ground. So here’s to a successful pledge. 🙂
If you wish to share your pledge you will have to make it public and/or publish it 🙂
Thought I had done that… forgot to save the changes. Too… many…. BUTTONS! 😛
I am late to the World Ember hype! 😀
Coming in a bit late after this! But hey, I’m trying to do both NaNoWriMo and the RPG Writer Workshop. Things have been busy. And the list is a bit of short, but my two articles for this world are averaging about 3200 words each.
Late to the hype but joining in anyway!
Late, but I did it… Kinda.
Better late than never, right?
WorldEmber is the first challenge that I do in World Anvil!!!! HYPE!!!
All aboard the late train… But it’s never too late to get inspired by your own work! @WorldEmber 2020 Pledge Document
Just noticed this, wow! OK, I’m in too. Looking forward to this.
My older world sinks so I’m going to fix it during Worldember!
First time I’ve ever done one of these. Also late but hopefully not too late
Very late, hopefully not too late (stupid real life) my world is currently pretty barebones, so feeling like fleshing it out here in this camp.
Here’s my pledge document! Now to finish up the meta… 🙂
Late response, if this is the third post its because I don’t see any of the previous posts I made.
Still a new world, so looking to set the basics up.
Mines still a relatively new world. Tried multiple times to do this but commenting doesn’t seem to work for me on my PC.
Late pledge, new world just trying to hash it out now.
Late pledge here, got a relatively new world as well so looking to really get it fleshed out.
Just the motivation I need to flesh out my Dungeons and Dragons city-state 🙂
Finally done with my pledge and super excited for World Ember 2020 to start! Here is my pledge: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/twin-moon-world-oceantourist/a/monthly-content-pledges-world-ember-2020-article
I now have a second setting I want to work on during WorldEmber, less ambitious than my first but it still deserved its own pledge article: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-tempest-wilds-michael-chandra/a/worldember-2020-prep-article
Looking to start a long-term project incorporating gaming and short-story concepts of mine for the last 30+ years. Ambitious, but … dream bit, win big.
Well I have finally done it. I created my pledge document for my first ever homebrew.
I will be working on whats to be a pathfinder 1e campaign. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/aether-promise-delta-bingosnaps/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article
Also a little late, but here it is: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/onira-kokopelli08/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article?preview=true?
Late, but here we go… good to have a target or two 🙂 https://www.worldanvil.com/w/shadowfire-ononomad/a/shadowfire-pledge-article
My fashionably late article. It’s public for now, but I plan to make it private by the end of the month since some topics in here get close to a few spoilers. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/kyre-cuttlesquish/a/world-ember-2020-pledge-article?preview=true
A bit late on this but heres mine https://www.worldanvil.com/w/imeria-nitrosm2/a/worldember-2020-pledge-document-article
I have so much work ahead of me, but I am excited to undertake Worldember!
Okey, here is kind of my Pledge. First time I’ve done one.
