We are celebrating creativity and the black creatives who carry the torch, and today we begin our journey with a feature of five amazing artists who are really worth your attention! Check out their beautiful creations, follow them, and support their efforts!
HILLARY D WILSON
Hillary is an artist based in Boston Massachusetts who seeks to, above all else, celebrate the beauty in people, nature, and stories. Though her art focuses on the fantastical, with bright colors and fantasy themes, her background in medical illustration strengthens her desire to convey realism in my portrayal of skin tones and anatomy.

VASHTI HARRISON
Part author – Illustrator – filmmaker Vashti Harrison is an artist originally from Onley, Virginia. She has a background in cinematography and screenwriting and a love for storytelling. She earned her BA from the University of Virginia with a double major in Media Studies and Studio Art with concentrations in Film and Cinematography. She received her MFA in Film and Video from CalArts where she snuck into the Animation Department to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. There she rekindled a love for drawing and painting. Now, utilizing both skill sets, she is passionate about crafting beautiful stories in both the film and kidlit worlds.

GORDON C. JAMES
Gordon C. James’ chosen artistic genre has its roots in Impressionism. The art of John Singer Sargent, Nicholai Fechin, Henry Ossawa Tanner, and many others inspired James to pursue a style that is both academic and expressive. As a result his work contains a lyricism not often found in contemporary art. Be it through the sensitivity found in his romantic pieces, or commitment to excellence in his commercial work, James always connects with his viewer. He says of his work, “When people see my art I want them to say, I know that person, I know that feeling.”

I’m sure this isn’t what this is for, but I would also add to that list, my friend Lexington Wolfcraft and Joe Phillips out of San Diego. Both are amazing black artists that have been living their lives as artists for a very long time. Lexington can be followed on Instagram @themightylex. Joe Phillips can be found @joephillipsart.
This is a great article that introduced to new artists! I would also like to plug two artists I enjoy as well: Geneva B who is on twitter as @gdbeeart and her website genevab.com who has a webcomic called HOVERGIRLS. Next is Kiana Khansmith, a board artist on the show Big City Greens, she can be found on twitter as @kianamaiart and tumblr as kianamaiart.tumblr.com.
I’ve commissioned Hillary Wilson on two occasions – both for landscapes (one with explorers in a purple forest, the other with a motorcycle driving through a mesa-strewn desert toward a distant city). Both pieces are tremendous. It’s nice to see her highlighted here.
i enjoyed the art particularly 🙂
