New year, new World Anvil upgrades! And for this first one, we’ve improved the our text editors to give you an even better writing and editing experience.
What’s the update about?
So, most of you know that World Anvil has two text editors—the Visual Editor and the Advanced Editor:
- The Visual Editor is a simple but powerful editor, great for writing and formatting quickly and easily without worrying about advanced features. Learn more.
- The Advanced Editor (a.k.a. Euclid) uses BBCode, allowing you to create complex and beautiful layouts, but it’s more complicated for beginners. Learn more.
Lately, we’ve been working on making these two editors more integrated (such as adding an editor switcher directly to articles), and as part of that work, the Euclid editor was temporarily only available in Advanced Edit while we did some transitioning work.
BUT NOW… starting today, we’ve introduced the Advanced Editor back into the Edit interface (formerly called Quick Edit)! So if your world is set to use Advanced Editor by default, the edit modal will also use it by default.
So what does this mean? Well, quicker access to the advanced functions and formatting directly from the regular edit of your articles! And of course, a better worldbuilding flow if you’re using the Advance Editor on your articles.
…but wait, there’s more!
The Advanced Editor itself has also been upgraded! It’s very similar to the previous one, but you’ll notice some visual improvements, as well as a fancy new find-and-replace option!
For now, the new version of the Advanced Editor is only available in the Edit UI, but the Advanced Edit interface will also see these improvements coming at a later date.
Are there more changes you want to see?
We’re ALWAYS reading your feedback (leave us feedback via our Help page) and Feature Requests (make a Feature Request here!), so if there’s something else you’d like to see, let us know! The whole World Anvil team is passionate (and slightly feral) when it comes to making your worldbuilding experience even better.
So never be afraid to let us know what’s working for you, and what’s not!
BTW: Some small name changes
And since we’re on the subject, you might have noticed some slightly different names for some buttons around the website, recently. As the website evolves and we develop new features, we need to make sure the words we use to describe things are still… well, descriptive!
- Quick Edit is now simply known as Edit.
- Full Edit has been renamed to Advanced Edit.
- Viewing articles as a modal (for example, from the search widget) is no longer called “Preview”, but “View“.
- “View in World” takes you to the Presentation Mode, so you can see how your article looks to others.
- The Euclid editor’s main name is now Advanced Editor.
This is all in an effort to make the different options in the website easier to understand, for both new and veteran users alike! If you’re ever unsure about what a feature does, take a look at the Learn section—we have a guide for every single feature on the platform!
