“Love does not dominate; it cultivates.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Challenges of 2020
“I’m much more me when I’m with you.” – Anonymous
Did you know that the community challenges have changed since last year?
Now you have a whole month to join in on them and the prizes are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The lucky winners will get published in the worldbuilding magazine, how awesome is that?
The new challenges are a month long to enter, but the judging period is a month long as well. The flash challenges have returned to keep you company while you wait for the winner announcements and the new challenge.
First Flash Challenge of 2020 – Love seasons
“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” – Charles Schulz
Today marks the start of this year’s first Flash Challenge. You have until the 19th to write and post your article entry links in the comments of this post.
Pick one of your cultures and write about a holiday that focuses on love. If your culture has a calendar, mark the season and link the calendar in the article. (Click here for a guide to the calendar feature) You do not need to do it but it would be fun. 🙂
How do they spend the holiday with their family? Their pets? A spouse or spouses? What do they do during the holiday? Is it more than one day? What’s the history of this tradition? Is it in celebration of a great man? (hints at previous flash challenges during this time of the year)
Janet & Dimitris will pick their favorites and share them on stream.
“In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
– First, you need a World Anvil account.
– Write about a love holiday celebrated in one or several of your cultures. Use the tradition template.
– Minimum of 300 words and a maximum of 1500 words.
– One article per account, one person per account.
– The article needs to be public.
– The article needs to be submitted before the 19th of February, at 11:59PM GMT (the site time, look at the bottom of almost all pages of WorldAnvil.)
Grab your hammer and go world build!
I really liked this challenge as it offered a unique concept to explore within my world. Very fun, even if it was a really quick challenge.
These mini challenges are fun! They have a summer camp vibe!
I had quite a bit of fun writing this and I think it really encapsulates the dwarven ideals of detail.
Thanks for the incentive! I have several elven holidays to create anyway, and this challenge was perfect for this one: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/toy-soldier-saga-sable-aradia/a/oroaias–flowering-of-love–article. As usual, I’m pushing the word count, but it checks out in Word if you don’t include the embedded calendar (which I assume would not count, since that’s another article.) If it doesn’t make the cut, please let me know and I’ll try to edit it down. Thank you!
A simple but effective tradition in one of my cities!
Not part of the Worldbuilder’s Guild or have a calendar feature, but I hope my article counts! When a religion tries to gain influence in an opposite culture through manipulating their culturally significant holidays!
I’m sure you don’t need to worry about that! I don’t see a lot of embedded calendars in the challenge entries, and it was optional anyway. Liked your article. Good work.

Here’s mine! Lets say I was inspired by the cover image 😉
The seaon of love is here so let’s celebrate a LOVE-craftian Mother’s Day. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/cenorad-sloqush/a/meodteg-article
I do like the flash challenge, have to think about things but remember that it is a smaller time frame. Also, a good hold up from the studies!
Spring is a time to crawl out of your hobbit holes and remember just how much you love being outside.
I have a bit of a squirrel obsession lately, so… Enjoy!
This was a nice break from studying. Perhaps a little too nice.
I’m going to enjoy these events they just boil my blood with creative passion.
did you mean to post your entry? because you just posted a link back to this article
What a fun challenge! Here’s my entry, at 1224 words: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-aradian-universe-ofmonstrouswords/a/aphrodisia-article
Fun! i am looking forward to more like this

A look at a traditional holiday with a twist.
Here is my entry ^.^
My entry to the challenge. Love these little events <3
I like this a lot!!
With 907 words, I present you my first ever article created for a challenge. Makes me incredible happy to actually finish something I started to write:
A long standing tradition that has changed it’s meaning over time!
I ended up writing it out just in time despite getting sidetracked with making my calendar for so long!
Here is my entry for the challenge, trimmed to just over 1300 words. Thank you for this. It gave me an idea for the current WIP.
Thank you for this challenge. Not only have I entered my first challenge, the details I have developed for the Festival of Cirera have fleshed out my image of the city of Akorros as well.
There’s a unique love that arises from shared storytellin’
Here’s my entry: CAMPFIRE DAYS
This was a very fun challenge! I enjoyed taking part in it and helping out!
I introduce to you the Matchmakers Festival, a corporate-sponsored event that brought an entire planet from the brink of a depressive end.
Building some depth to a culture that first came to light in Worldember
Here we go! I might slightly tweak it for next few hours, but let’s go and celebrate Heartwarming with the Dwarfs, shall we?
It’s a short article, but I wanted to join in on the fun! 🙂
Not entirely happy with where the article went, but it is certainly a foundation of what can be done in the future. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/the-distorted-lands-snakevenom/a/ocular-solstice-article
