WHAT are these Worldbuilding challenges?
World Anvil worldbuilding challenges come in three main types: Community Challenges, Flash Challenges, and our big month-long events, Summer Camp and WorldEmber!
Our Community Challenges take place four times a year. In these events, you have a month to create and polish an article answering a specific worldbuilding prompt. Entries are submitted via the competition page and are judged by our Master of Games and guest judges. And, of course, you can expect tons of amazing prizes for the worldbuilding challenges in 2022!
The Flash Challenges are usually about a single prompt too and are managed on the blog and tend to have fewer requirements. These are the most casual of our worldbuilding challenges, and a lot of our community really enjoys the chilled-out feeling! There are no prizes for completion (although some of them have badges), but we’ll show off our favorite entries in the World Anvil Saturday Community Stream (7pm GMT, 11am PST on Saturdays). Expect one or two flash worldbuilding challenges in February, April, June, August, and October. Spooktober and Mapvember are slightly different, in that they have as many prompts as their month, instead of having a single one. Check out the 2021 editions of Spooktober and Mapvember!
Our BIG events — Summer Camp and WorldEmber
Our biggest events of the year are month-long marathons of worldbuilding fun! These worldbuilding challenges are sponsored, which means lots of opportunities to win prizes! There are many categories to compete in and lots of winners. Best of all, the entire community comes together to support one another in streams, on Discord, and on social media.
In July we celebrate World Anvil’s Summer Camp, a worldbuilding challenge inviting you to complete around 30 worldbuilding prompts over the month. This marathon of worldbuilding is a great opportunity to flesh out a new area of your world, or to start a brand new one! You can learn more about Summer Camp on the summer camp landing page, and see examples of prompts from previous years. In June, we run homework challenges (here are some examples from last year) to help you get yourself and your world ready!
Can you write 10,000 words of worldbuilding in a month? That’s the premise of WorldEmber, a free-for-all of worldbuilding, creativity, and achievement! WorldEmber runs every December, with homework challenges (here are some examples from last year) in November to help you prepare yourself and your world for the challenge! You can learn more about WorldEmber on the WorldEmber landing page.
WorldEmber and Summer Camp can be exhausting to complete, so starting this year we’ll have a READING challenge in the month afterward —that’s January for WorldEmber and August for Summer Camp! Think of it as a follow-up to these events to celebrate the huge effort you put in! They will overlap with other writing challenges, but we want to give you the chance to rest while still keeping in touch with the community. Plus, you get to read the amazing worldbuilding your fellow Anvilites wrote!
What about NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo (and its little sibling Camp NaNoWriMo) are writing challenges that, similarly to WorldEmber, challenge you to reach a specific word count with your novel or story! These are not official World Anvil challenges, but we like to support our community members that take part. So expect Discord word sprints, encouragement, and an all-around supportive and amazing community!
WHY should I take part in these challenges?
The most important part of our worldbuilding challenges is improving your world setting! Sometimes it’s about focusing on a very specific thing (like the community challenges), other times it’s about reaching a word count (like WorldEmber). But no matter the type of challenge, you’ll end up with more words, more content, and better worldbuilding for your creative project. Additionally, winners get shoutouts in our social media, on our Twitch channel, and in our Discord community—so it’s a great way to see your name in lights. And there are prizes too! Depending on the challenge, these range from virtual participation badges to huge raffles.
WHERE can I learn more about the Worldbuilding Challenges?
We announce and share our worldbuilding challenges on our Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram the moment they go live! Our challenges often have hashtags, and if you use those and tag us in, we might share your articles on our official social media accounts too, to give them a boost!
You can also learn about our worldbuilding challenges, and everything else going on in our community, on our Discord server. And of course, we also shout out our challenges —and the winners— live on our streams, over on Twitch! We go live Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm UK time, 11am Pacific time!
Are there other challenges you’d like us to run? Or maybe an external challenge you’d like us to support within the World Anvil community? Let us know in the comments!
