New World Anvil new features in more detail!

So lets dig into each of these feature bundles in more detail!

Folders update

This small-but-powerful update will make organizing your content on World Anvil even easier! All types of content now have folders, helping you organize your maps, timelines, manuscripts, secrets, historical events and more.

Especially for worlds with A LOT of content, this new feature is a godsend. One of my worlds has OVER TWO HUNDRED historical events, and I’m already excited to organize those into “Deep history”, “Campaign Events”, “Novel Events”, “Important NPCs”, etc!

You can create folders from the bottom of the sidebars, then just drag-and-drop (or dragon-drop, as we say on the team) folders and content to organize. Get the full updated Guide to the World Anvil Interface for more details!

Improved image management

Our image management system just got an upgrade! While the design looks similar, there are some very exciting upgrades that make images WAY easier to manage, organize and access now.

First of all, the image manager now slides out OVER what you’ve been working on! This means that you can be writing an article, pull open the image manager to grab what you want, and then GO BACK TO YOUR ARTICLE AGAIN without reloading the page. 🙌 Seamless!

In the old image management system, you organized your images in galleries which ALSO allowed you to create carousels in articles. This wasn’t bad, but… we wanted to do better! Now, when you open the image manager for the first time, the system will copy all your galleries into a folder system. Your original galleries will remain untouched (you’ll find them in the top right) and you can still use them for carousels etc. But now you can ALSO organize your images by folders, making them easier to navigate and organize.

The image manager is also way more mobile friendly now, and easier to navigate. It’s quicker to replace your images with a newer version, and to tag and add metadata to them. AND we’ve improved the search!

New notebooks!

Notebooks have always been a great spot to keep your thoughts and ideas BEFORE they become worldbuilding. All guild members have the notebook feature, which lets you create multiple notebooks for different kinds of notes. They’re great for:

  • Quick notes on the fly (notebook is mobile friendly)
  • “Meta” information about your worlds and projects
  • Creative journaling and problem solving around a project
  • Brainstorming and ideas
  • Keeping snippets of BBCode or CSS for quick reference
  • World Style guides or Design guide

Easier to organize

In this release, we’ve added a collection of new features! To help you organize your notes more easily, we’ve added:

  • Search and filtering your notebook
  • Tags to aid your searches
  • Move your notes between sections
  • You can now Star important notes for quick reference! These are available from the “starred notes” section at the top of each notebook.

Aesthetic notetaking

You can also make your notebooks prettier and easier to parse quickly!

  • As with articles, you can now add Icons to your note titles and sections for quick visual reference.
  • Choose a key color for your sections to make them visually distinct
  • Notes can also now have cover images: you can choose your own, or select one from our library of images and patterns

More options for text editors

Text editors are always an important question. So you can now:

  • Choose a default editor for your notebook
  • … but also choose a text editor on a note-by-note basis!
  • Link articles from your currently activated world
  • Use Full BBCode support for Euclid (containers, variables, etc may not appear as in presentation) – to assist storage of BBCode snippets

Introducing: Metadata in Notes!

We’ve also introduced new feature to notebooks: metadata! In essence, metadata works like key-value pairs, allowing you to add metadata to your notes. You can even create note templates with specific metadata values included, that can be repeated each time.

For example, if you’re creating different types of notes, you could use:

  • Type: Creative Journal
  • Type: CSS snippets
  • Type: brainstorming
  • Type: encounter ideas

Other ideas for metadata include:

  • Date: 24th June 2025
  • Project: RPG
  • System: Pathfinder2

… and the sky’s the limit!

You’ll notice we’ve introduced a bunch of new functionality and technology which you may see propagated through other areas of World Anvil in future updates. We also have several upcoming improvements designed to work in synergy with these new updates – keep an eye out for those coming soon 👀
